Summer Letter from the OEA Chairman

Monday, 17 July, 2017 -- Helen Wilson

I am pleased to report that regular events have been taking place this last six months, namely the London drinks, the annual Golf competition and the South West reunion lunch. I am even more pleased to say that we have also had inaugural events too. An after-work Bristol reunion for those in the South West was well supported at its first showing and a group of expat Elthamians got together in Sydney. The best news for me however was an inaugural female Elthamians event to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March which was very popular and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended…so I’ve heard!

We also saw the Summer Reunion take place on Sunday 2 July alongside the annual cricket match. The Annual Reunion dinner this October will see all of those with a 2 or a 7 in their year of leaving, gather at Eltham College on 7 October. These dinners have been growing in popularity so I urge those of you to whom it applies to check out the details on the Elthamians.net website and sign up fast.

In the OEAL’s efforts to support our alumni in industry we look forward to welcoming all lawyers, both practising and aspiring, to the Elthamian Legal Evening on 11 October being hosted by OE Stephen Hockman QC at his chambers. Thank you Stephen. Again details are on the website. We are planning our in-industry event for Spring 2018 and will happily take suggestions to add to the pot.

Being my sport I must say hearty congratulations to the Old Elthamians Rugby Club 1st XV which has gained promotion to the National 1 league, an incredible achievement. Well done to all involved. We look forward to welcoming some very established national sides including Rosslyn Park, Coventry and Fylde to College Meadow this coming season. I am sure that neither they nor us ever dreamt this would be happening. With the historic familiarity between the two teams, the fixture versus Blackheath Rugby Club is surely a must see game, either Home or Away! It would be great to display a sea of blue and gold in the crowd. The fixture dates have yet to be confirmed so keep an eye out.

We continue to focus on ensuring that the future events calendar is as inclusive, appropriate and simply enjoyable to as many as possible. The OEAL is here to serve our Elthamian community and we are grateful for any suggestions for events or general improvements. Please contact either me or Helen in our Alumni Office with your thoughts.

I wish you all a very enjoyable Summer.
