OBE Awarded to OE Caroline Miller

Wednesday, 4 January, 2017 -- Helen Wilson

Congratulations to OE Caroline Miller (1990) who has been awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours list. Caroline who, as Director of Dance UK, was instrumental, with Arts Council England, in that organisation’s merger with three sister dance bodies in April 2016 to form the united force for dance now known as One Dance UK. (The four constituents were Association of Dance of the African Diaspora, National Dance Teachers Association, Dance UK and Youth Dance England). During her ten years as Director of Dance UK, Caroline Miller raised the profile of dance in the UK substantially, working tirelessly to gain the support of Government for dance across its many forms. From these firm foundations, One Dance UK moves its base from London to Birmingham in 2017

Caroline became Director of Dance UK in January 2006 with the remit to transform the organisation into the lead advocacy body for the industry. During her tenure she presented two dance manifestos to government, worked with politicians to create the All Party Parliamentary Dance Group and established the Honours Advisory Committee ensuring a diverse range of dance professionals are nominated for the honours lists. Her major achievements include the 2015 industry wide conference with over 125 speakers in 8 London venues, and working with Helen Laws and Dance UK’s partners to create the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science, (including three NHS dancers’ injury clinics), which resulted in both being included in the Evening Standard’s list of 1000 most influential Londoners. In 2010 Caroline proposed the merger of Dance UK and other dance support organisations to provide an improved, financially viable infrastructure for dance, leading to the creation of One Dance UK.

In 2011 Caroline was selected for the prestigious De Vos Institute of Arts Management International Fellowship in Washington DC.  At the start of 2016, Caroline awarded the 2015 De Valois Award for Outstanding Achievement at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards.

Caroline is now Executive Director at Orlando Ballet in Florida.
