A new careers forum was held at Eltham College on Tuesday 1st March, with the focus on roles in the Construction industry. The main challenge currently facing the industry is a shortage in both managerial and skilled workforce. With 2.8 million people working in Construction in the UK and 350,000 Construction related companies in the UK; there is a real effort being made to encourage more school leavers and graduates into the industry. An excellent panel of speakers talked to the audience of students and parents about their areas of expertise which covered Architecture; Civil Engineering; Quantity Surveying; Project Management; Operations; Land Management and Residential Development. The panel were Vinno Balla (2010) Design Engineer at Waterman Infrastructure & Environment Ltd; Martin Bellinger (1984) COO at Essential Land LLP (Land Management & Development); Kees van der Sande (1990) Associate Director at Formation Architecture; Dorian Starte (2012) recently qualified in Architecture from Liverpool University; Stephen Wells (Parent and Chair of Governors) Operations Director at MACE and Neil Hope (1993) a Partner at Bailey Garner. These forums are really invaluable for the students, a big thank you to all the speakers who gave their time to advise the students on what working in the Construction industry is really all about. The key messages from the panel were that it is a very interesting, rewarding, fast growing industry and it doesn’t have to involve lots of mud and scaffolding!
